Abstract: Who’s training who? In our current technology rich environment, training collection development liaisons is now an interactive process. New librarians are bringing to their jobs innovative, dynamic ideas about technology and communication that can have a positive impact on collection development activities.

Drawing on their experience as new liaisons at Albertsons Library, Boise State University, three librarians discuss and describe the technologies that they are using to promote, educate, and enhance collection development including Web 2.0 technologies such as blogs, interactive online liaison manuals, RSS, customized Web pages for faculty, embedded librarians, RCL, and more.

Abstract: Technical EBooks: a Solution Looking for a Problem? Presented by Melissa Kozel, Cheri Folkner, Barbara Glackin, Rich Stoddart, Peggy Cooper, Boise State University, Albertsons Library. Albertsons Library at Boise State University has been slow to move into the ebook arena for a variety of reasons including the inadequacies of simultaneous user models and the uncertainty of ebook technology. However, the most significant question for BSU has been usefulness of ebooks to their patrons. Are ebooks a passing fad or are they the answer to improved access to information? In January 2006, BSU selected a small group of technical books in an electronic format via the ProQuest Safari Tech Books Online database. This session will discuss the rational behind selecting technical books as an introduction to ebooks, the use of that set of ebooks compared to similar print books, and the plan that we have created for the incorporation of other ebooks into the Albertsons Library collection.

Collection Development Philosophy

Statement of Purpose
One of the Library’s primary goals is to provide the best access to information possible to support Boise State’s curriculum and research. Because of continuing fiscal constraints, skyrocketing journal prices, ongoing movement toward electronic resources, new serials' title proliferation, and continuing web publication, collection development activities have become increasingly challenging at Boise State University.

Factors within the Library, and the University, have spurred the creation of this online manual. They include:

The movement toward more interdisciplinary programs and support
Educating faculty representatives to facilitate a more collaborative environment for selection
Liaisons becoming more accountable for selection decisions
Looking for more cooperative purchasing arrangements
Providing more networked resources
The ongoing need to provide access to materials not locally owned
Scrutinizing the collection due to escalating prices, format changes, electronic products, and changing priorities
The University’s desire to add programs and degrees ·
The Library’s need to balance Boise State’s goals to focus on research while maintaining teaching materials.

Preserving the best possible access to information that truly supports the needs of the University is a major challenge requiring time, specialized knowledge, and acquired skills. For example, an understanding of what goes on in academic departments and an ability to interact effectively with departmental representatives is necessary to make tough selection decisions in order to balance the competing demands for library, and university, funds. Better fiscal accountability, more communication between the Library and academic departments, and interdepartmental communication are additional benefits derived from a more uniform and accessible approach to collection development.

General Guidelines
The following general principles guide the development of Boise State’s Albertsons Library Collection: · The mission of Boise State’s Albertsons Library is to promote learning and research by making available materials appropriate to the University’s mission and by creating an environment, whether in person or remotely, in which faculty and students can interact with library resources in the pursuit of knowledge. In order to fulfill this mission, the Library will continuously and systematically acquire and maintain a core collection and provide electronic access to databases and other information formats primarily for students and faculty or inter-library loan resources that meet these needs. · Materials collected are college level and scholarly in nature. The exceptions to this policy are curriculum and browsing collection materials. Recreational reading or materials for subjects not taught at the university are acquired on a limited basis. · Library representatives and faculty suggest titles for purchase and databases for licensing, and this input is seriously considered in purchasing decisions, dependent on available funding. · Electronic formats are heavily weighted for purchase. The library does not purchase esoteric materials and embraces state-of-the-art formats and delivery systems which enhance its ability to serve its clientele. In most cases, these will replace rather than supplement traditional materials. As always, the Library will provide timely access to external resources, whether print or electronic, when they are needed. · The library no longer solicits gift books and money for the purchase of library materials, due to staff and budget constraints, although some books are still accepted in a limited way. When gifts are accepted, it is understood that such donations become Library property and will be evaluated and judged by the same criteria as those for purchase. · Textbooks, study guides, and workbooks required for individual classes are not normally collected. The Library may purchase specific items for print researves.

Assumptions

Because of the significant costs of traditional library materials and electronic resources, and their long-term importance to the university and the world of scholarship, time and energy are invested in training new liaisons and providing continuing education opportunities for seasoned selectors to enhance their collection decisions.

Many liaisons build collections in subjects for which they have limited expertise. Regardless, to build a successful collection, an understanding of the library and its mission and the university’s mission is critical before specific subject buying decisions are made.

Collection development training needs, relating to the library and university’s special collecting policies and procedures and their specific culture, must be deliberated.

Collection development training needs relating to subject knowledge, publishers, research processes in particular disciplines, electronic as the preferred format, and communication and management skills are critical in developing liaison skills.

To be a successful library liaison, there must be a knowledge of, and cooperation with, other library departments, such as acquisitions, serials, and cataloging.

Most liaisons must function immediately in their collection development roles upon being hired so in-house collection tools are helpful in providing collection development direction.

Technology should not be the driver in Collection Development
Regardless, many social software tools can be incorporated into Col Dev
Collateral goal: Become social software comfortable

Philosophy: ollaborative collection development with faculty at Boise State
Doing CD the old-fashioned way--sending Choice slips, Blackwell's forms, catalogs, book reviews off to faculty in print format (works the best for us)

Old method: keeping track of everything sent off to departments with Excel spreadsheet
Now, using Library Thing
Benefits: easy, fun, and can use Library Thing to add tags, ratings, reviews (I add collection area and priority codes, too.)
Joined "Librarians who Library Thing"--hope to pick their collection brains to use them as another collection tool
Can export data into Excel, the preferred format for many library staff
Can make book lists for special projects like collection development grants
Can create themed lists for our library's monthly book displays

Welcome to the Collection Management wiki! This wiki was created by Boise State University Librarians for the participants of the Acquisitions Institute at Timberline Lodge in Oregon, May 19th, 2007.

We have decided to maintain this wiki with the intent of it becoming a collaborative endeavor for those interested in sharing their experiences, asking questions, and expanding their understanding of current collection development practices and innovation. Collection Development Blogs

1) Why use?

a)Save time.
b) Outreach.
c) Add another door to library resources.
d) Faculty oriented approach.

2) How to set up?

a) Blogger. There are a lot of blog generators out there.
b) You can be up in running in 5 minutes. Most of html heavy-lifting has already been done for you. Takes about 1/2 hour to customize blog how you want.

3) Amount of time allocated to maintain?

a) I figure about 10 minutes per blog each week depending on the post. Does not take much effort to maintain once set up.
b) RSS feeds can be used to keep blog "active".
c) Try update every two weeks unless something comes up sooner.
d) The purpose and intended audience of this blog may make this blog less active than others but I am flexible to post as changes warrant.

4) Feedback on?

a) Word of mouth response mainly. I have a few faculty mention the blog when I see them.
b) Remember this a test / BETA.

5) Advertising for?

Slow roll out. Experimental at this point. Since it is a select audience mainly by email. Every email to faculty include a P.S. about the blogs. Every semester put out email to faculty in each department advertising library services including the blog.

6) Lessons learned?

a) 1. Find that it helps me to keep up on issues related to that department. Always looking for posts, so I am keenly aware of new books, news about the faculty, etc.
b) Instead of targeting a blog for each specific subject area it might be wiser to build a blog for each department. Foster collaboration with additional librarians also doing liaison work in those departments. Perhaps engage a faculty member to also work on the blog.

7) Where do we go from here?

a) Blog policy?
b) Our library is considering hosting the blogs internally with our own software. Great potential for the library to "host" the blogs of faculty members. These blogs can provide space for their research ideas and foster communication in their subject areas. Librarians could read these blogs and suggest resources.

RSS can deliver dynamic continually updated content from RSS-enabled webpages directly to you. Many publishers are providing RSS feeds to journal table of contents as well as other resources. Using a RSS Feed Reader like Google Reader one view all RSS subscriptions in one place.

For example see the public view of the Google Reader I use to populate my Collection Development blogs with journal table of contents information.

RSS is a family of web feed formats used to publish frequently updated digital content, such as blogs, news feeds or podcasts.

Users of RSS content use programs called feed 'readers' or 'aggregators': the user 'subscribes' to a feed by supplying to their reader a link to the feed; the reader can then check the user's subscribed feeds to see if any of those feeds have new content since the last time it checked, and if so, retrieve that content and present it to the user.

The initials "RSS" are variously used to refer to the following standards:
Really Simple Syndication (RSS 2.0)
Rich Site Summary (RSS 0.91, RSS 1.0)
